The SmartVista software is designed to ensure maximum consistency in the processing of customer transactions by minimising human effort, and hence, human error. This is achieved through a system of references between different data items, so that every item should only be held in the system once and whenever it is needed for processing in connection with some other item, the other item will carry an indication of where to find the required values. For example, instead of holding all the customer application details as part of an account record, only the Application ID is included in the account details, so that, should any of the application details be required, they could be found by a simple query to the customer application entity.

SmartVista takes this concept one step further by using special entities, Schemes and Templates, that, for the most part, consist of references to other entities and serve as points of consolidation of information from different sources. This, for example, allows changing the terms and conditions of service for all customers linked to a certain Contract ID by editing and saving the details of this particular Contract Template.
